In the months March\, April and June\, we co-create with these actors a ‘Plea of the North Sea’. You can follow the process on www.ambassadevandenoordzee.nl. \nOn Saturday 16th of June\, during Tech Culture festival Border Sessions a hands-on and inspirational event is organised in the Embassy with the following central question: How can we use open data and artificial intelligence to give a political voice to the North Sea ecosystem? \nBring your design\, hack\, artistics\, visualisation\, analytics\, programming\, and entrepreneurship skills and give the creatures and things that inhabit and make use of our North Sea a visually appealing\, realtime\, and real voice. Your input\, the output of the lab\, as well as the plea that is developed will be presented in the Hague to the second chamber on the 29th of June. \nThe Embassy of the North Sea is an initiative of the Parliament of Things\, and developed by Stroom Den Haag\, Stichting De Noordzee\, Building Conversation\, The Ponies and De Waag Society\, with support from Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie\, Gemeente Den Haag\, Mondriaanfond and Bank Giro Loterij Fonds.

DESCRIPTION:“Being heavily influenced by his work\, Veem House for Performance invited thinker and philosopher Bruno Latour to elaborate on his new book Facing Gaia\,” they write on their website. And about the book: \n“The emergence of modern sciences in the seventeenth century profoundly renewed our understanding of nature. For the last three centuries new ideas of nature have been continually developed by theology\, politics\, economics\, and science\, especially the sciences of the material world. The situation is even more unstable today\, now that we have entered an ecological mutation of unprecedented scale. Some call it the Anthropocene\, but it is best described as a new climatic regime. And a new regime it certainly is\, since the many unexpected connections between human activity and the natural world oblige every one of us to reopen the earlier notions of nature and redistribute what had been packed inside. So the question now arises: what will replace the old ways of looking at nature? \nThis book explores a potential candidate proposed by James Lovelock when he chose the name Gaia for the fragile\, complex system through which living phenomena modify the Earth. The fact that he was immediately misunderstood proves simply that his readers have tried to fit this new notion into an older frame\, transforming Gaia into a single organism\, a kind of giant thermostat\, some sort of New Age goddess\, or even divine Providence. In this series of lectures on natural religion\, Bruno Latour argues that the complex and ambiguous figure of Gaia offers\, on the contrary\, an ideal way to disentangle the ethical\, political\, theological\, and scientific aspects of the now obsolete notion of nature. He lays the groundwork for a future collaboration among scientists\, theologians\, activists\, and artists as they\, and we\, begin to adjust to the new climatic regime.”

Wat is een mens en wat is zijn positie? Hoe brengen we de mens en zijn technosfeer in balans met de omgeving? Kunnen we alleen nog maar spreken van rechten voor de mens? Waar ligt de grens tussen mensen beter maken en betere mensen maken? Daarnaast roept het vragen op wat de mens is en wat onze positie is (of hoort te zijn) tegenover onze omgeving. Een nieuw mensbeeld dringt zich op en hedendaagse denkers zoals schrijver Yuval Noah Harari en oprichter Wired Magazine Kevin Kelly\, zetten in de VPRO Tegenlicht documentaire een stip aan de horizon. Wij graven dieper in de thema’s die zij agenderen en onderzoeken de impact van nieuwe mensvisies: trans – en posthumanisme. \n\n\n\n\nPosthumanisme\nPosthumanisme is de visie waarbij de mens niet meer centraal staat in zijn omgeving. Protagoras’ stelling om de mens als de maat der dingen aan te duiden is definitief voorbijgestreefd. Wij zijn niet meer de enigen die visie en betekenis geven aan onze omgeving. Hoe gaan we het belang van de dingen en de natuur op gelijkwaardige voet met de mens plaatsen? Hoe verhouden we onszelf tegenover de intrinsieke waarde van het ecosysteem? Hoe creëren we een symbiose tussen de techno – en biosfeer? \nTranshumanisme\nTechnologie grijpt ook in op het eigen lichaam en tast de grenzen aan van het menselijke en het kunstmatige. Technieken als genetische modificatie\, nanochips en vergaande integratie van computertechniek stellen ons in staat om de mens te overstijgen. Wat zijn de nieuwe mogelijkheden voor de menselijke natuur? Tot waar kunnen we gaan met de mens? Hoe moeten we als maatschappij omgaan met deze technologische ontwikkelingen? \nDe mens als maatgevend\nWe gaan in gesprek met cultuursocioloog en schrijver Ruben Jacobs. Hij benadrukt dat we de mens niet meer als leidinggevend\, centraal in zijn omgeving kunnen zien\, maar dat zijn bewustzijn afhankelijk is van de omringende ecologie. Alle technologie ten spijt\, we zijn noodzakelijk gelimiteerd door de natuur\, een natuur waar we essentieel zelf onderdeel van uitmaken. En omdat we onderdeel uitmaken van die natuur\, moet net de relatie tussen mens en aarde centraal staan. \nNext Nature Network\nKoert van Mensvoort voelt zich als filosoof en ontwerper nog het meest thuis op het kruispunt van innovatief design en technologie. Met Next Nature Network onderzoekt hij nieuwe technologische mogelijkheden en welke invloed dat heeft op onze verhouding met onszelf en de natuur. Hoe ontwerpen we een technosfeer die als natuurlijk aanvoelt\, zonder daarbij de menselijke factor uit het oog te verliezen? Een symbiose maken tussen mens\, natuur en technologie is het doel waar Koert van Mensvoort naart streeft. \n\nDe rechten van de dingen\nMet de oprichter van het Parlement der Dingen Thijs Middeldorp gaan we de vermeende exclusiviteit van de mensenrechten ter discussie stellen. Kunnen we de belangen van de mens alleen nog steeds centraal stellen? Of moeten we niet gaan nadenken over rechtspersoonlijkheid voor rivieren\, bergen of dingen? Als we de invalshoek van de dingen tot ons nemen en gaan incalculeren waar hun belangen liggen\, komen we misschien uit tot een betere bescherming van onze leefomgeving. \n\nMorele kwesties van biotech\nFilosoof en jurist Britta van Beers buigt zich over de waarde van ons DNA\, de status van het menselijk embryo en de bescherming van de menselijke waardigheid. Met welk mensbeeld moeten we handelen in een moreel en legaal kader? In hoeverre kunnen we de biotechnologie vrije gang van zaken geven in het reduceren van de mens tot ding? Waar wordt de menselijke waardigheid aangetast bij de opdeling van de mens tot een bundel neuronen\, weefsel\, data\, … ? We gaan met haar de netelige morele kwesties onderzoeken die de evolutie van de biotechnologie oproept.”

DESCRIPTION:This event is in Dutch and organised by Veem House for Performance: \nDe relatie tussen de mens en zijn omgeving; de aarde\, dieren\, materialen en dingen was nog nooit zo belangrijk en urgent als nu. \n“Waar het op neerkomt is dat de mensheid als geheel ook eenzaam is.” \n– Lieke Marsman \n‘… Ik moest er voor zorgen dat ik het tegenovergestelde van een mens was’\, concludeert Ida nadat haar moeder haar zegt dat de mens ‘door en door slecht is’. Ida is de hoofdpersoon in Lieke Marsman’s debuut Het Tegenovergestelde van een Mens\, zowel een urgente essayistische en poëtische gedachteoefening over existentiële vragen met betrekking tot de roofbouw die we op de aarde hebben gepleegd\, als ook een roman over klimaat(verandering) en liefde. \n‘In het scheppingsverhaal van de Maori\, is de mens familie van de zee\, de wind en het bos. In het verhaal dat mij altijd is verteld\, overheerst de mens die natuur juist.’ Zo begint Thijs Middendorp een artikel in de serie ‘Het einde van de mens als maat der dingen’ in de Correspondent\, over zijn bezoek aan de Whanguanui-rivier in Nieuw-Zeeland\, die sinds een paar jaar een rechtspersoon is. Zijn fascinatie daarvoor sluit nauw aan bij het mede door hem opgerichte Parlement van de Dingen: een publieke ruimte waarin het recht niet alleen op mensen maar op het leven an sich betrokken wordt. \nZowel Lieke als Thijs oefenen zich in een (nieuw?) engagement met de wereld. Deze twee bijzondere stemmen in het posthumanistisch discours in Nederland\, vertellen deze middag over een andere\, misschien wel omgekeerde\, manier van ‘mens zijn’. De setting is een juist zeer artificiële ruimte van aluminium – de scenografie van de performance CEEPORT van Yuru Umamota dat de tragedie van onze blik verkent – en brengt de aanwezigheid van en bewustzijn over materialen voort als een andere entiteit om in acht te nemen en mee te leven. \nWords for the Future \nGepresenteerd wordt ook de allereerste issue van de publicatiereeks Words for the Future\, ontwikkeld door Nienke Scholts. Meer dan futuristische toekomstvisies zijn de woorden in deze serie – en de werelden waarnaar ze verwijzen – pogingen om een verhouding tot de complexiteit van het heden te vinden. Is environmental care and nature conservation everyone’s responsibility? \nIn 1994\, Maria Silva became the youngest senator ever elected to the Federal Senate of Brazil. Silva was raised in the Amazon as one of twelve children in a family of rubber tappers on a rubber plantation. She acted as Minister of Environment\, and successfully contributed to the protection of nature\, social justice and sustainable development of the Amazon region. In addition\, she decreased deforestation by almost sixty percent between 2004 and 2007. Over 20 million people voted for her in the 2010 presidential election\, where she came in third place. In 2014 Silva was the presidential candidate for the Brazilian Socialist Party. DESCRIPTION:Into The Great Wide Open (ITGWO) is a multi-day\, pop-cultural festival on the Wadden Islands that features music\, art\, literature and film. The festival aims at several generations of progressive arts enthusiasts\, and is organised by a non-profit foundation\, with a team of professionals from all sectors of the creative industries. ITGWO is a leader in the field of responsible\, sustainable production\, and wants to be a driving force of change in this area. \nSunday morning\, the festival presents the program ‘We Water’ about our rights and obligations regarding water. On behalf of the Parliament of Things\, Thijs Middeldorp tells about the Embassy of the North Sea\, which will be established in The Hague in 2018. \n→ Wij Water —De opwekking van de Watermeent\nMet o.a. Sef\, Hiske Versprille\, Leopold Messan\, Thijs Middeldorp en Edwin Gardner. \nHet wordt een even absurd als interessant programma\, de opwekking van De Watermeent op zondagmorgen in de De Bolder. Onder de bezielende leiding van Yousef Gnaoui\, alias Sef\, geven tal van voordrachtkunstenaars in woord en gebaar gestalte aan de verklaring van ‘ons water’ tot een gemeenschappelijk goed. Het water dat ook op Vlieland voor een paar grijpstuivers uit de kraan komt. Water uit een zoetwaterbel die als een bijna oneindige bron fungeert. (Zeewater verdampt\, vormt regenwolken\, de regen slaat neer op de duinen\, de zandlagen filteren het in 30 jaar\, waarna Vitens het oppompt en in de waterleidingen leidt.) Dat water is dus van ons allemaal. Dat is een recht. Maar dat recht brengt ook een plicht met zich mee. \nDaarover gaat het dus in ‘Wij Water’\, een verhaal dat ook tot uiting komt in BRAK – de waterbar ‘Bij De IJsbaan’ en op de ‘watercocktailontvangst’ bij de boot. \nZondag 3 september 11:30 uur in De Bolder\n‘Wij Water’ wordt mogelijk gemaakt door Dopper\, Weltevree\, Studio Rooiejas\, Lab Vlieland\, Monnik en Vitens.

DESCRIPTION:Tijd\, ruimte en woorden delen \n\nWe zijn eraan gewend dat de mens spreekt\, niet alleen namens zichzelf maar ook namens andere entiteiten: het heelal\, het regenwoud\, de dieren\, de stad. Parliament of Things (Parlement van de Dingen) is een theorie van Bruno Latour die een pleidooi inhoudt voor het recht van het object. Volgens Latour weigert de mens in het moderne denken de rechten\, autonomie en ‘agency’ (het handelend vermogen) van het object te erkennen. Hij pleit voor een mensvisie waarin de waarden (niet de waarde) van objecten en andere entiteiten een actieve rol spelen. Bij de ontwikkeling van deze gespreksvorm willen wij afstand nemen van het antropocentrisch denken\, waarin de mens een plek inneemt in het middelpunt van het bestaan\, en ons afvragen wat de relatie is tussen onszelf en de dingen. Kunnen wij spreken namens de dingen? \nTijdens het Parlement van de dingen onderzoeken Theatermaker Lotte van den Berg en beeldend kunstenaar Daan ‘t Sas wat het voor ons Westerlingen betekent om namens de dingen\, namens de natuur te spreken. Blijft dit een dualistische verhouding\, van mens tot ding\, of is het denkbaar dat er een andere relatie ontstaat\, dat we onszelf een andere plek geven in het universum?\n \nBuilding Conversation\nTheatermaker Lotte van den Berg en beeldend kunstenaar Daan ’t Sas bouwen met Building Conversation een ruimte om tot een uitwisseling van perspectieven te komen. Ze tonen en doorlopen de conflicten in onze samenleving\, zonder ze glad te strijken of te radicaliseren. Geïnspireerd door gesprekstechnieken uit verschillende culturen verheffen ze het gesprek tot een kunstwerk. Voor iedereen die het gesprek met elkaar anders wil gaan voeren. \nRondom de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van 15 maart doet Building Conversation radicale voorstellen om op een andere manier met elkaar in gesprek te gaan. \nPraten we nog met elkaar of gooien we alleen meningen over de schutting? Onze sterk polariserende samenleving lijkt te schreeuwen om hernieuwde aandacht voor het gesprek. Building Conversation nodigt bekend en onbekend uit om met elkaar het gesprek op andere wijze te gaan voeren in aanloop naar en na afloop van de verkiezingen. \nOver de hele wereld zijn er door de tijd heen tal van technieken en rituelen ontwikkeld om met elkaar – als stam\, gemeenschap of samenleving – te werken aan gedragen besluitvorming\, erkenning van alle aanwezigen en omgang met verschil.\nBuilding Conversation liet zich inspireren door deze technieken en ontwikkelde een serie gespreksvormen. \nTijdens Het parlement van de dingen schuiven we ons eigen menselijk perspectief terzijde en onderzoeken we wat het voor ons (westerlingen) betekent om te spreken en te luisteren als een ding\, plant of dier. Wat zouden de politieke consequenties zijn van een wezenlijk andere verhouding tussen mens\, dier\, plant en ding.
